Dirty Filter Backwash/clean filter with - use a degreaser Calcium Hardness Level too High Drain 1 inch and refill with fresh water. Retest, then continue cycle until hardness reaches 200-250 ppm Chlorine Level Low Test and adjust automatic chlorinator or manually add chlorine - shock if necessary. Combined Chlorine or Chloramines Present Shock treat with calcium hypochlorite, sodium Di-chlor, liquid chlorine or oxidizing compound Microscopic Particles Passing through Filter Use a flocullant to combine smaller particles so that the filter can remove them. Consider a D.E. filter. pH Too High Test and add acid as required per kit instructions. GREEN WATER Cloudy Green-Green Algae Shock treat / clean filter Clear Green-Copper Use a metal sequestering agent per instructions. Check for low pH and/or total alkalinity and boost as needed. REDDISH-BROWN WATER Iron or Manganese Use a metal sequestering agent per instructions. Check for low pH and/or total alkalinity and boost as needed. BLACK SPOTS Black Algae If problem is minor, a good black algaecide with persistent brushing and thorough filter cleanings will usually work. For major problems, draining the pool and chlorine washing may be necessary. Black algae is extremely persistent, and to control it requires diligence. SKIN & EYE IRRITATION Combined Chlorine Level Too High Shock with an oxidizing compound (potassium monopersulfate) to eliminate organic wastes. pH Too High or Too Low Test pH and Total Alkalinity. Adjust as needed.
